Small Business Seminars

Thank you for your interest in attending a North Carolina Department of Revenue Small Business Seminar. The Department is holding a series of seminars focused on proactively informing small business owners of their State tax responsibilities. Past seminar participants have reported that they found the seminars to be very beneficial.

To Register:

  • View the seminars offered.
  • Click the Register button for the seminar location and time you would like to attend.
  • Complete the Registration Form.
  • Check for an email stating that you are successfully registered to attend the seminar or an email stating the event is full. If the email states the event is full, please view the seminar listing to see if you can attend at another location and repeat the registration process.

Current Seminars Offered:

  • Tax Information for Small Businesses (Business Essentials) (Carolina Shores - DOR; Charlotte - DOR; Clayton - DOR; Raleigh - DOR; Rocky Mount - DOR; Wilson - DOR, SOS)

    The NC Department of Revenue, NC Secretary of State, NC Industrial Commission, and NC Department of Commerce Division of Employment Security will present a seminar titled "Business Essentials". Each agency will cover basic requirements to help businesses in North Carolina understand the laws and obligations necessary to be a compliant business.

    Some or all agencies may be present. Please check the list of cities above for the agencies that will be attending.

    Department of Revenue (DOR) – Covers the basics of tax compliance ranging from registering your business, to withholding from employees, and sales and use tax requirements. Information will be provided on a program for businesses that have fallen behind on sales and use, withholding, and other trust taxes.

    Secretary of State (SOS) – Covers registration of business entities and the requirements for doing so. Also will provide an overview of the things small businesses need to consider when conducting securities offering in order to raise capital to finance their businesses.

    Industrial Commission (IC) - Covers Workers' Compensation laws and the types of businesses required to carry workers' compensation insurance and how to obtain it.

    Employment Security (ES) - Covers unemployment insurance laws, employment taxes, and the appeals process.

    Business Link North Carolina (BLNC) - Covers steps to be "compliant" with the state, such as business structure, types of business and location of business. BLNC will also share other resources that are on file from education to potential funding opportunities like grants/loans and how to obtain specific certifications like HUB, SBE, Minority Owned Business etc.

    At the end of the seminar, there will be a question and answer session with the presenters and networking possibilities with other business owners. Don't miss this great opportunity.
  • Keys to Success Workshop (Charlotte, Durham, Elizabeth City, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Raleigh, Wilmington, Winston-Salem)

    Taxpayers will participate in hands on activities while learning their basic business requirements for the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
  • Nonprofit Claim for Refund Workshop (Rocky Mount, Williamston)

    The NC Department of Revenue will host a workshop for certain non-profits that qualify for a refund of sales & use taxes paid.

    The workshop will focus on the step-by-step process for completing the Non-profit and Governmental Entity Claim for Refund of State and County Sales and Use Taxes.

    This hands-on workshop is intended to help non-profits better understand the proper procedure for requesting a sales and use tax refund.

    At the end of the seminar, there will be a question and answer session with the presenter and networking possibilities with other business owners. Don't miss this great opportunity.
  • Sales and Use Tax Workshop (Cary, Dunn)

    The NC Department of Revenue will host a sales and use tax workshop for small business owners. The workshop will discuss the basics of sales and use taxes including registering for a sales and use tax account, learning about the most common types of sales and use taxes collected, and preparing and filing a sales and use tax return.

    This hands-on workshop is intended to help small business owners better understand their sales and use tax obligations and the proper procedure for filing and paying a sales and use tax return.

    At the end of the seminar, there will be a question and answer session with the presenter and networking possibilities with other business owners. Don't miss this great opportunity.

  • Tax Implications (Bayboro)

    This session covers the basics of tax compliance ranging from registering your business, to withholding from employees, and sales and use tax requirements. Information will be provided on a program for businesses that have fallen behind on sales and use, withholding, and other trust taxes.
