Charlotte Tax Preparer Charged with State Tax Offenses

RALEIGH – A Charlotte tax preparer was arrested Friday on felony tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Ronald McIlwain, 65, of 10310 Creswell Ct., Charlotte, was charged on May 13, 2016 with 27 counts of Aid or Assist in the Preparation of Fraudulent Tax Returns.
Arrest warrants allege that McIlwain aided in the preparation of fraudulent North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for clients of Overnight Tax Service for the tax years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. McIlwain is the manager of Overnight Tax Services located in Charlotte.
McIlwain appeared before a Mecklenburg County magistrate and was placed under a $135,000.00 bond. A first appearance was scheduled for June 13, 2016 in Wake County District Court in Raleigh.
The charges against McIlwain resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
